What does hip-hop need? According to Run the Jewels, more meowing. – Washington Post (blog)

It’s come to this.

Having conquered the Internet and the made-for-TV-movie, it appears that our feline overlords have set their sights on the world of music. Cat lovers rejoice!

Run the Jewels, a duo that actually garners deep respect among purists and insufferably self-serious hip-hop heads, has released a remix album of their sophomore album “Run the Jewels 2″ called “Meow the Jewels.”

Rapper Michael Render and rapper/producer El-P are fairly political — Killer Mike is actually a pretty vocal Bernie Sanders supporter — and earlier this year, they hinted that a cat remix could be in the works. As it turns out, they were serious, and now we’ve been treated to the equivalent of what happens when the Meow Mix jingle meets actual dope beats. One of the producers on the album is Just Blaze, who has crafted tracks for everyone from Jay Z to Madonna to Kendrick Lamar to T.I. to Drake. Not only is he legit, his services do not come cheap.

The whole thing — which is also being released on vinyl because of course it is — is available for free on the Run the Jewels site.

[Insert sweeping, santimonious statement about how streaming music has completely changed the game and now you have real musicians releasing cat-rap albums because no one respects true artistry anymore, wah, wah, wah here.]

If nothing else, “Meow the Jewels” should be responsible for some great new kitty memes, though we’ll refrain from commenting on feline puns. See:

It’s only a matter of time before a cat makes it onto the official guest list for a state dinner and the White House chefs are finding ways to remix tuna tartare.

Here is the new cat-tastic track listing for “Meow the Jewels.” These guys were not kidding around.

1. Meowpurrdy feat. Lil Bub, Maceo, Delonte & Snoop Dogg (Remixed by El-P)
2. Oh My Darling Don’t Meow (Remixed by Just Blaze)
3. Pawfluffer Night (Remixed by Zola Jesus)
4. Close Your Eyes And Meow To Fluff (Remixed by Geoff Barrow)
5. All Meow Life (Remixed by Nick Hook)
6. Lie, Cheat, Meow (Remixed by Prince Paul)
7. Meowrly (Remixed by BOOTS)
8. Paw Due Respect (Remixed by Blood Diamonds)
9. Snug Again (Remixed by Little Shalimar)
10. Creown (Remixed by The Alchemist)
11. Angelsnuggler (Remixed by Dan The Automator)
12. Creown (BONUS) (Remixed by 3D of Massive Attack)

And here’s “Oh My Darling Don’t Meow.” You may want to listen with headphones. There are an abundance of cat noises, but they don’t beep — er, meow — out the expletives.
