A man walked into a Journal Square shop today and swiped $5,600 in jewelry in a daring daytime heist, Jersey City police said.

Village Jewelry employees told police that a man, described as 5-foot-6, unshaven, medium build and short black hair, wearing a black jacket and black pants, walked into the store at 11:15 a.m. and asked to see some jewelry for his wife.

The employee took five necklaces from a case for the man, who asked “Are they real?” The man then snatched the necklaces off the counter and ran out of the store, police said.

The man jumped into a waiting car — described as a 2004 silver BMW — and fled south on Kennedy Boulevard, police said.

The jewelry stolen was identified as five 10-karat gold necklaces valued between $750 and $1,700 each, the police report said.
