The St. Joseph County Police Department recognized and awarded four boys Tuesday.

Police say Max Coffee, Thomas Brenneman, Nathan Van Meter and Andrew Hatfield found two bags full of jewelry while Kayaking in Baugo Bay. The teens took it home and called police.

Little did they know, the jewelry was stolen during a handful of burglaries around the area.

“One of the police officers called me about a week and a half later and told me ‘We want to take you back there and show us exactly where everything was.’ We went back there. Little did I think we found even more than we found that day, which was four pillowcases,” said Andrew Hatfield, one of the boys who found the jewelry.

The teens were excused from school today to receive their recognition from the sheriff. They say they never expected to receive the awards.
