Jewelry store owner killed in robbery remembered – KMTV

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV)-  it was a day that broke Omaha’s heart.  A gunman burst into a small business near Crossroads, and shot and killed the popular owner of JR’s Jewelry and Gifts.

Today on the one year anniversary, Jim Minshall’s family remembered him at the store, in a very emotional way. The Minshall families says the past year has been a struggle for them, but they say they couldn’t have gotten through it without the generosity of our community.

Hugs were shared and tears were shed. Love you sister, i love you too” as dozens gathered to remember 71 year old Jim Minshall on the anniversary of his death

“You can shed tears that he is gone or you can smile because he has lived”. At 10:26 a.m., the crowd stood in silence to remember the moment Minshall lost his life.

73 yellow ballons were then released into the sky, many with special messages written on them. “Wanna draw a heart?” Minshall’s only grandchild Willow proudly printed her name on her balloon so she could be in the sky with her Papa. “See they are all headed to that cloud, yup that must be the cloud Papa is sitting on huh?”

Minshall’s daughter and Willow’s mother, Tracey Bland organized Thursday’s balloon launch outside her father’s jewelry store. “I know that Dad would have done anything he could to make sure that nobody was injured and unfortunately he was the one who was taken.”  Minshall was shot and killed by 19 year old Milton Dortch last September as Dortch tried to rob JR’s jewelry. Dortch is now serving a life sentence for 1st degree murder.

“i just knew that this family wasn’t going to be the same without him.” Minshall’s niece in law Becky Minshall says she will always cherish the last piece of jewelry her uncle Jim fixed for her, her beloved angel wings ring. “I figured he is part of my angel now, he is my angel wings, cause that is the last thing he did for me”

The store was closed today and will most likely be closed on the anniversary of Minshall’s death every year.
