Louisville Craft Beer Week returns Friday – The Courier-Journal

Check out the list for the sixth annual Louisville Craft Beer Week, and you might be overwhelmed.

Everyone from breweries to restaurants to already-established festivals has joined the movement led by LouisvilleBeer.com, creating a lineup of almost 75 events over the course of 10 days.

It’s a sign of the times, said LouisvilleBeer.com co-founder John Wurth. Craft beer is the “it” drink, and no one wants to get left behind.

“I just think the whole craft beer industry, really, in Kentucky is growing,” Wurth said. “I think more people, restaurants included, are thinking, ‘How are we going to compete with the people down the street who have an awesome craft beer selection, and we just carry Bud and Miller?’ … People still drink Bud and Miller and Coors, but how do we get a new generation in here?”

Louisville’s slightly-more-than-a-week Craft Beer Week has offered special keg openings and tap takeovers annually for the past six years, but with more craft beer-focused restaurants and microbreweries now on the scene — and even more on the way — the number of participating businesses and varied events has continued to grow.

This year, Frankfort Avenue’s Crescent Hill Craft House will join the week with force, planning 10 events from beer trivia to beer bingo, while coming brewery Akasha will make its debut, offering tours of its facility and tastings at NuLu neighbor Feast BBQ.

Several existing festivals, including the Mini Maker Faire and National Jug Band Jubilee, have also joined the celebration, adding craft beer to their programs to catch a new set of interests.

“I think people are bored with the standbys that they grew up drinking in college or whatever,” Wurth said. “Everybody’s a foodie now. Everybody’s looking for the next big thing. Young people are not happy getting a Bloody Mary. They want a Bloody Mary that’s going to light them on fire. I think people are bored with the status quo.”
