Indie Craft Parade celebrates one-of-a-kind art – Greenville News

The Indie Craft Parade is the antithesis of stores that sell mass-produced arts and crafts.

This is the sixth year for the celebration of handmade and one-of-a-kind creations by 80 artisans from around the region. The event goes on Saturday and Sunday in Huguenot Mill at the Peace Center.

The selection includes two-dimensional fine art, such as prints; 3D works in ceramic, wood, metal and glass; knitted and crocheted items; clothing, jewelry and purses; paper crafts, from stationery to hand-crafted books; along with artisanal foods, toys, and home and garden items.

Elizabeth Ramos, Indie Craft Parade creative director, said the event isn’t just a place to buy something new and different.

“It is just unique, one-of-a-kind goods from across the South,” she said. “And in addition to that, you get to meet the makers behind the goods. So it’s a good shopping environment, and it’s also a good education in what’s happening in the craft world right now.”

The festival kicks off Friday with a VIP Gala, which offers a preview of the goods for sale Saturday and Sunday, along with live music, prize giveaways, and hors d’oeuvres. Proceeds from the VIP Gala benefit the Makers Collective,. which offers support to creative entrepreneurs.

Independent artists are the focus of the Indie Craft Parade, and one goal is to provide a market and exposure for those artists.

Because of the popularity of the event, not much will be different this year than previous festivals, Ramos said.

“We typically have around 80 artists, so it’s going to feel familiar in that way,” Ramos said. “But there’s a lot of new work … so it may feel familiar but also pretty fresh. We have a lot of new ceramic artists, lots of leather goods this year, which is exciting.”
