American Craft Week, First Friday coinciding

Register Herald

The October edition of Lewisburg’s First Fridays after Five coincides with the American Craft Week celebration, and Harmony Ridge Gallery will welcome both events with a jewelry show by artist Shari Dixon.

Craft Week brings together galleries, artists’ studios, festivals and art institutions across the country in tribute to American handmade objects. Dixon’s artworks in jewelry incorporate natural elements, such as flowers and feathers, gem stones and freshwater pearls. In addition to jewelry, Harmony Ridge showcases many items produced by American craft artists, including fun garden sculptures, pottery, wood inlay mirrors and unique clocks.

First Fridays after Five is a monthly event in Lewisburg, featuring live music, art events and other wonderful excuses to socialize while exploring the downtown shopping and arts district. Shops, galleries and restaurants remain open until 9 p.m., with many serving complimentary refreshments and free entertainment.

This Friday, the Greenbrier Valley Visitors Center on Washington Street pulls out all the stops, with music, art and education on display. Greenbrier County Schools will present Classroom of Today initiatives, led by the county’s Teacher of the Year, Kevin Warfield, and his students, who will demonstrate the process whereby a prosthetic hand is fabricated using a 3-D printer.

The Visitors Center will also premiere the Greenbrier Artists’ show, “Artistic Taste,” a collection of food-related paintings, on display all month in honor of the upcoming Taste of Our Towns (T.O.O.T.) food festival in Lewisburg. The Strum Sum Band will provide toe-tapping tunes to further entertain visitors.

Just down the street, Bella the Corner Gourmet will launch a Thanksgiving chocolate turkey giveaway and serve up seasonal treats, wine and pumpkin cider, while Plants Etc. hosts “Tarot for the Soul” — free tarot readings by Christen McCormack.

Story Time at Love Child will begin at 6 p.m., and Patina will offer pumpkin cake and cider.

The Front Porch will serve visitors a glass of wine and other free refreshments. A percentage of the evening’s sales at the shop will benefit the local HospiceCare office.

The Greenbrier Historical Society and the North House Museum are hosting graveyard tours in the Old Stone Church Cemetery and the Pointer Cemetery at 5:30 and 6 p.m. Visitors are invited to walk among the graves in these historic cemeteries, while local community actors portray and tell the stories of some of the townsfolk who were laid to rest there.

Rounding out the evening, Elk River Ramblers performs at The Asylum on East Randolph Street at 9 p.m.
